We both grew up in homes with modest incomes and learned from our parents at a young age to manage money. We still had to learn to work together to prioritize spending, especially as we chose to have Mary Beth quit working full time when we began having kids. Additionally, our many military moves meant learning to adjust to cost of living differences wherever we landed, both overseas and in various states within the US. Consistent with the case in most couples, one of us is the budget-loving nerd (Art) and the other is the free-spirited spender (Mary Beth.)
